When a fictional prairie dog colony is threatened by human development, ten of the animals set off on an adventure to find a new home in Journey From Little Left, the debut novel from local author Gary Michael. The book was inspired by Michael’s appreciation for Watership Down and his observations of a prairie dog colony on a hike outside of Fort Collins a few years ago.

“I’m looking at these adorable little critters chirping away on their mounds and scurrying underground,” he recalls. “And I thought, boy, it’d be fun to write a novel about those prairie dogs.” The result is a classic yarn about the values of friendship, courage, cooperation and inner strength, populated by a cast of colorful, anthropomorphic animal characters. And although it’s marketed to a YA audience, Michael insists it’s an engaging read for everyone.

“Anybody thirteen years and up…who likes a good adventure story and characters that are entertaining will enjoy it,” he promises.

Michael will read from and sign his book at 7 p.m. at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue. Admission is free; the book is $17. For more information, call 303-322-7727 or visit www.tatteredcover.com.
