Early this morning, a man opened the door of his Denver home and was greeted in the most unpleasant way imaginable — by a bullet to the chest.
At this writing, the man is said to be in critical condition but is expected to survive. Here’s what we know thus far.
At 2:09 a.m., the Denver Police Department tweeted the following:

According to 9News, reporting from the site of the shooting, the address included in the DPD tweet isn’t quite right. The actual location is on Navajo between 40th and 41st — an area captured in the following interactive graphic. If you have problems seeing the image, click “View Larger Map.”

What happened? A DPD rep tells the station police arrived at a home along this stretch around 1 a.m.
The shooting victim was still able to communicate when the cops got there. He’s quoted as saying a guy knocked at the door moments earlier. After the resident answered, the man is said to have asked for someone he didn’t know.
And then he opened fire.
The bullet struck the victim in the upper chest. He was transported to Denver Health and rushed into surgery in critical condition — but doctors are hopeful he’ll survive.
No specific description has been released at this point, and neither has a suspect been named or caught. Cops searched the surrounding neighborhood but didn’t find anyone — meaning that the mystery of this late-night call is still a considerable distance from being solved.
