Again this year, Starz Denver Film Festival artistic director Brit Withey is offering his must-see picks for each day of the fest — including many flicks that movie lovers might otherwise miss amid the flood of silver-screen goodies.
Today, he spotlights Alleluia.

A film from Belgium, Alleluia “is going to be a little difficult to describe, because it hinges on a lot of suspense,” Withey concedes. “It’s a thriller, which is not necessarily our wheelhouse. We don’t show a lot of edge-of-your-seat thrillers. But that makes it really fun when we find one that works.
“The film is based on a true story that was made into a film in the ’60s called The Honeymoon Killers. In this version, the woman has recently split with whoever she’d been with and she’s lonely, but not very interested in getting out there and hitting the singles scene. Her best friend talks her into going online to find someone to go out on a date with and she does — and she meets this man and really falls for him. Hard.
“The man is a super-smooth talker and very handsome, and he sweeps her off her feet. But things start to go really awry from there. And that’s what needs to be left to the audience to see. But I can say it doesn’t turn out well for anybody from that point on.
“It’s a really fun ride,” Withey stresses, “but it’s a bit brutal.”
