There is nothing traditional about the programming at Off-Center@The Jones — including how this interactive sendup of oft-stuffy theater announces its programming every year: with a big bash. Tonight’s Off-Center Season Release Party promises to be a wild evening of live trailers, costumes, surprises and plenty of free beer.
“It’s the fun, interactive element that makes Off-Center what it is; as much as it is great to go to the theater for a show, it’s great for the audience to be involved in a more casual atmosphere,” says Denver Center Theatre Company spokeswoman Hope Grandon. Curated by Emily Tarquin and Charlie Miller, the offbeat series’s new season will bring long-form improv show Cult Following back for another year, alongside a monthlong engagement of The Santaland Diaries, making its Off-Center debut after a successful 2013 run at the Garner Galleria; the rest of Off-Center’s off-the-wall shows will be a secret until tonight’s big reveal. But previous seasons have brought to the stage live storytelling, Double Dare-like game shows, and a drag history lesson turned dance party, among other things.
Off-Center will celebrate its fourth season tonight at the Jones Theatre, in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and festivities begin at 8; admission is free. For more information, visit denveroffcenter.org or call 303-893-6090.
