Vivienne VaVoom (aka Michelle Baldwin) has made a brand out of the “Burlesque As It Was” concept. Indeed, if burlesque has become a runaway train of popularity in recent years, VaVoom was the woman who drove that locomotive into Denver. And after earning accolades for her old-timey style of burlesque, teaching classes and writing a book, VaVoom is back with a brand-new Burlesque As It Was show.
“So much of burlesque has become experimental,” she says, “and I wanted to take it back to the place where I started with it, which was really high-level costumes, old-fashioned music, and a show that transports you to a different era. I love that kind of entertainment, and that’s what I’m trying to capture here.
“A lot of burlesque these days is mixed with modern music, modern ideas and pop culture — which I love,” she adds. “I love that something I started doing in ’98 has now become all of these different things. I’m just taking burlesque back to the style I fell in love with.”
The duo Wayfaring Stranger will provide vaudeville jokes and music, and there will be burlesque performances by VaVoom, GiGi D’Lovely, Orchid Mei and more. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Syntax: Physic Opera, 554 South Broadway; tickets are $15. Learn more at viviennevavoom.com.
