The original Neon Genesis Evangelion represented the pinnacle of the giant-robot-versus-alien-monster subgenre of anime. Like so many other successful franchises, that timeless tale of a young man tasked with averting the Apocalypse by piloting a big robot is in the midst of a shiny new reboot.
The latest film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, offers the same digitally enhanced robot battles as the previous two films in the series while pushing the story into even more new directions.
“This whole reboot is a very digital reboot; there are shots that are shot-for-shot [remakes] that look, by today’s standards, amazing compared to how they looked in the original. That’s part of the charm — the shiny,” says Keith Garcia, creative manager for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. “It kind of feels like the difference between the hand-drawn Disney films and a new Disney film — Frozen versus Beauty and the Beast. They both look really great, but one represents the new wave of animation.”
