No matter where you woke up on New Year’s Day — disheveled, hung over and with holes in your memory — it could have been much worse. Don’t believe it? Consider the plight of the protagonist of Open Grave, who wakes up in a pit of dead bodies with absolutely no memory of how he came to be there, or even who he is. Directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego and starring Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium), Open Grave is a gritty, low-budget horror feature with that little something extra.
“It’s definitely horror, but it’s got more of a mystery aspect to it,” says Ernie Quiroz of the Denver Film Society. “It kind of reminds me of old Twilight Zone episodes.”
Naturally, it gets worse for the hero before it gets better: The first people he meets are armed and suspicious and suffering from the same memory loss, and things get violent before long as they search for the source of their mysterious amnesia and that pile of corpses.
