Delicious soup. Denver landmarks. Dancing girls. That might seem like a strange, even random, collection of things, but local burlesque performer Frenchie Renard plans to bring them all together in a one-of-a-kind cookbook — if she can raise the money to get it published.
“I consider myself a professional home cook,” she says. “I have five children and I cook; the most nourishing thing I think you can make is soup. Every person has a favorite soup, don’t you think?” she asks.
More than two dozen of her favorite soups will be featured in the book, with accompanying photos of local burlesque performers showing off said soups at some of Denver’s most recognizable locations, from Casa Bonita to the convention center. When you picture it that way, it all starts to make a bit more sense, doesn’t it? “I think burlesque is the same way,” she says. “It’s comedy; it’s dance; it’s beauty and stripping, of course.”
To raise the money she’ll need to self-publish her book, Renard is hosting Frenchie’s Souper Fundraiser tonight at 8 p.m. at the Monkey Barrel, 1611 Platte Street. The evening will include burlesque, soup, live music and a silent auction of everything from artwork to a date with Sid Pink. “It’s going to be a wild night,” she promises.
