For a kids’ movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory sure is full of weird shit. Oompa Loompas. psychedelic interludes. A seemingly psychotic Gene Wilder. And, of course, the candy — the crazy, colorful candy. “That film, at least for me, created such wild ideas about fantasy and candy,” says Keith Garcia, creative director for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. “It’s amazing I didn’t develop some kind of psychosexual connection to that movie.”
That crazy-candy connection has helped the film survive and thrive for more than forty years, finding fans over multiple generations. Those fans are in for something sweet at the Ultimate Willy Wonka Party at the Alamo. Half of the actors who portrayed the film’s bratty children — Veruca, Violet and Mike TeeVee — will be on hand for a Q&A about the film, and the Alamo will offer a special menu plus lots and lots of candy, naturally.
There are two chances to party Wonka style — one at 7 p.m. and a second at 8 p.m. at the Alamo, 7301 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton. For tickets, $27, and more information, visit drafthouse.com/denver.
