Before Equinox Theatre Company could bring Evil Dead: The Musical to Denver, there were a few technical problems to be solved.
“The technical challenge of the show was a little bit daunting,” explains director Deb Flomberg. “You need a singing giant moose head. You need trees that rape people. You need a hand; he has to chop his hand off on stage. He has to chop someone’s head off on stage. There’s copious amounts of stage blood…”
Luckily for us, Flomberg was able to deal with those challenges and bring the musical version of Sam Raimi’s classic splatter trilogy to life — bloody, visceral, clothes-staining life, because it wouldn’t be Evil Dead without showers of blood. “People are very excited to get covered in blood. Basically, [the splatter zone] is the first three rows, and we have a lot of blood rigged and various effects we have built into the show,” Flomberg says. “Anyone who’s a big fan of these shows obviously wants to get covered in blood. Why wouldn’t you? It’s a lot of fun.”
Evil Dead: The Musical opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. and runs Fridays and Saturdays through September 14 at the Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street.
