Just because Star Wars inspired the name, don’t make the mistake of thinking the geeky goodness of May the Fourth Be With You stops with George Lucas’s saga of a galaxy far, far away. If it’s got a robot, a spaceship or an alien, it’s fair game today.
“The idea of it was to create a holiday that celebrates the culture that we love — comic books and sci-fi and fantasy, and all of the wonderful stories and archetypes that have been fed to us through movies and literature,” explains organizer Dan Landes. “It has more of a centralized sci-fi theme, but there’s no rules on it.” That means that no one will look down at you if you want to dress like a Hobbit to party with the Stormtroopers and Daleks.
The festivities start with local comedians adding acerbic comedic commentary to Star Wars, then proceed to a massive outdoor dance party soundtracked by Itchy-O, ManCub, Prism Waves and more. Once that’s over, you can wind down at the after-party with space-age comedy from Andrew Novick and the Fine Gentleman’s Club.
The Star Wars screening starts at 2 p.m. at Deer Pile, 206 East 13th Avenue, with the big outdoor party kicking off at 5 and ending at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. For more info and tickets, visit maythefourthdenver.com.
