Comrade Brewing will salute southeast Denver in 2014

Welkome to the Party.

That’s the slogan for Comrade Brewing, which plans to open in southeast Denver next year with “back-to-basics” beers and a tongue-in-cheek nod to Communism.

“People talk a lot about the camaraderie in the craft-beer industry. It’s a very friendly community, so that is actually the theme,” says owner David Lin.

“But ‘Camaraderie Brewing’ is an unwieldy name, so it’s a play on that. And since people definitely have a picture in mind when they hear the word ‘comrade,’ we are running with it,” he adds. The 5,300-square-foot location at 7667 East Iliff Avenue will include a tap room with room for more than ninety people and a fifteen-barrel brewing system.

Lin has worked at several breweries, including Aurora’s Dry Dock, over the past eight years in a variety of positions, including brewing and sales, but he has hired a brewmaster from Oregon who will do all of the recipe formulation and brewing.

“I’ve worked in the craft-brewing industry and left a couple of times, but for some reason, whenever I leave, it sucks me back in. Hopefully, I won’t have to leave again,” he says.

Lin looked at dozens of locations in the Denver metro area before deciding on his spot near the intersection of Iliff and Quebec Street. And it could be a good spot since the next closest brewery is Copper Kettle, at least a mile away — and there’s not much beyond that.

Comrade will have four “back-to-basics” beers: a kolsch, an IPA, a milk stout and and Irish red, along with four to six seasonal rotators, Lin says.

He hopes to open the brewery before April 2014.
