Bike messengers, avid cyclists and racing newbies, strap on your helmets for the Mile High Messenger Challenge 2012. In the grand tradition of unsanctioned alleycat racing — informal city bike races — this all-ages competition is a test of speed and safety, with a series of checkpoints, package pick-ups and drop-offs, all done on a bicycle.
“The point is, with all of the stress on your mind, it’s about how well you do on your bike,” says co-organizer Jeremy Cox. In bringing out cyclists of all skill levels, Cox hopes to re-energize the art of being a bike messenger by showing new riders what it’s like to navigate the downtown grid under pressure.
Registration for the Mile High Messenger Challenge begins at 5 p.m. today at Track Shack, 1338 Tremont Place; the race begins shortly after 6. An after-party starts around 9:30 p.m. at the Denver FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, where the winner will be awarded a cash prize and participants will get a chance to score other swag. Registration is $10; proceeds will benefit the Colorado Meth Project.
