Fusing electronics with rock music is hardly the most original thing a band can do these days. But Sunset Curse does so with a complete immersion in both musical realms. The insistent beats are straight out of dance music, but the forceful rhythms and soaring guitar leads sound like these guys have learned a lot from more adventurous post-punk bands. Interweaving strands of industrial, electronic pop and post-punk, Sunset Curse (due at the hi-dive on Saturday, July 31) has managed to strike an original chord in an increasingly overpopulated refrain. There’s nothing artificial about the heart shown in the band’s songwriting. With joyful abandon and catharsis, Sunset Curse makes melancholy music sound triumphant.
