Denver’s newest green yoga studio, the Yoga Mat, opened on Wednesday, March 31 — but the real party is tonight, during the first Art Opening at the Mat. “We’re hoping to have a lot of art openings and make it a home base for some community things,” says owner Erin Bakersmith. “It’s definitely a big opening.”

There will be eleven artists — Kevin Fuller, Stephanie Jarrett, Carolyn Johnson, Matt Schreiber, Brett Connor, Dustin Tomes, Marco Merced, Kat Lam, Jeremie Memming, Shaz Sedighzadeh and Jared Hardy — plus a DJ and wine to help kick things off. “We’re just trying to tap into the community and be conscious consumers,” notes Bakersmith, who credits Green Spaces (where Yoga Mat started) with giving her lots of ideas about “how to make the biggest impact with what we have.

“Yoga’s a practice you take throughout your everyday life,” she says, “being a conscious person and realizing that all of your actions have some kind of consequence.” That said, she appreciates a touch of the playful in her studio. “We really want to make yoga more playful — being present in your body and having a conversation with people in the community,” Bakersmith explains. “It’s not all about the workout, and is your foot in perfect position with your back leg. We’re making it more accessible to everyone.” And she’s doing it through all-level classes featuring Michael Jackson on the stereo on Saturdays — or perhaps you’d prefer a mid-week, mid-day de-stress moment on the mat.

Stop by the Yoga Mat, 2200 Market Street, #107, from 5 to 10 p.m. to get acquainted. Call 314-680-6374 or e-mail ontheyogamat@gmail.com.
