Everyone seems to understand the appeal of watching a film in the theater, and many of us also get the appeal of cuddling up with a good book. But in my opinion, there’s a severely underrated form of narrative entertainment that some people just don’t know about: Sitting in a theater and listening to someone weave a tale in person brings me back to my childhood, settling in for the night while my mom or dad told me a story. Ah, memories.
That’s why I think we’re so lucky to have Stories on Stage, monthly collections of themed stories read on stage by local actors. This month’s presentation is Personal Testimonies, featuring the stories “Why I Like Country Music,” “Rules of the Game,” “The Management of Grief” and “The Viaduct Scene,” from the 1929 Marx Brothers film The Cocoanuts. Catch this round of Stories on Stage today at 1:30 or 6:30 p.m. in the Denver Performing Arts Complex’s Stage Theatre; tickets are $22, $18 for groups, and if you’re really strapped for cash, you can ask about the LoDough pay-what-you-can program.
