For their Asian pop-culture boutique, Andrew Novick and his wife, Janene Hurst, wanted a name that was too long and translated funny — like the nonsensical English phrases on Japanese T-shirts. Inspired by a plastic model of a dessert they spotted in the window of a Japanese cafe, they named it Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast.
After their store opened in November, Novick and Hurst wanted to have some actual pillow toast, so the folks at Snooze gave it a try. The resulting pillow-toast spinoff is a cross between bread pudding and French toast, made with cinnamon challah and baked apple bits, and topped with caramel sauce, cinnamon and whipped cream.
So Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast is now a boutique and a dish — and tonight, it will also be a party. From 6 to 9 p.m. at Snooze, 2262 Larimer Street, there will be free pillow-toast samples, Asian snacks and Japanese pop and rock music and videos, as well as T-shirts for sale. The event is free, with a cash bar, but reservations are required at www.gimmegimmepillowtoast.com or 303-872-7706.
If you miss the party, pillow toast is now on the regular Snooze menu — and you can check out the boutique at 445 South Saulsbury Street in Lakewood’s Belmar complex.
