While collaborating on the 2007 film Once, musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova proved that life can imitate art, as their real-life love connection mirrored the on-screen romance. The Swell Season, which opens tonight at the Denver FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, follows Hansard’s and Irglova’s love story from its fictional inception to a tangible courtship and back, then through an eventual breakup while continuing on as a band.
“The film crosses the line without being forced,” says Keith Garcia, programming manager for the DFC. The documentary is a perfect sequel to Once, he adds, because it tells both the tale of their love and what real-life pressures — in this case, multiple Oscar wins and a two-year-long tour — can do to tear that love apart. Shot in black and white, the film captures intimate moments between Hansard and Irglova — often with uncomfortable precision — and displays the pair’s perseverance through personal turmoil in the name of collaborative art.
